Parking In Hastings

On-street parking

On-street 'Pay and Display' machines can be easily identified by the large blue 'P' motif on the side.

They accept £2.00, £1.00, 50p, 20p, 10p and 5p coins, but do not give change.   A pay-as-you-go, or 'smart' card is also available for the on-street machines to save the need to carry the right change.

These cards can be purchased from the Parking Office or from the Hastings Information Centre at Queens Square and carry a credit value of £10 or £20.  A £5 refundable deposit is charged for each card. Once purchased, the card can be recharged at the machines at any time, to top up the level of credit available.

The charging period for on-street pay and display bays is 9am to 8pm, on all days of the week (including Sundays and Bank Holidays).  Free parking is available from 8pm overnight to 9am only.

Blue Badge holders parking

Within our car parks, blue badge holders may park for up to three hours free of charge, but only within designated disabled bays (marked by signs and yellow hatching) and only if both blue badge and time clock are correctly displayed.  It must be possible for the Civil Enforcement Officer to see clearly the expiry date and serial number of the badge, as a note is taken of these details.

If the designated bays are full and you elect to park in an ordinary pay and display bay, your badge is not valid and you must purchase a pay and display ticket and place it in the windscreen of your vehicle.

If you need to stay for longer than three hours and are in a designated disabled bay, we suggest that you purchase a pay and display ticket to cover the extra time you need and display that alongside your badge and clock.  The Civil Enforcement Officers will take account of this extra paid for time, when patrolling the car park.

Elsewhere in the town, a valid Blue Badge must be displayed, showing the expiry date and serial number, if parking in the following areas:

  • On double and single yellow lines, for up to 3 hours unless a loading ban is in operation.  A parking disk (clock) showing your time of arrival must also be displayed
  • On-street pay and display bays, which are free and without time restriction when a valid blue badge is displayed
  • On-street disabled parking bays offer free parking without time restriction (blue badge to be displayed)
  • Priory Meadow Shopping Centre (normal parking charges apply) but the 'shopmobility' area on level 8 has wide parking bays and services for blue badge holders

Motorcycle parking

The current Hastings Borough Council policy on parking for motorcycles is as follows:

  • When parking in a Pay and Display car park, regardless of whether or not you are in a marked Pay and Display Bay or Motorcycle Bay, you must pay the charge for one hours parking but this will cover you for the rest of the day or until the car park closes.  A new charging period will commence at 8am the next day.
  • When parking in an On Street Pay and Display Bay, you must pay for one hours parking if intending to stay for more than an hour, but are only able to stay for the maximum parking time as stated on the machine and the signpost.
  • Motorcycles are not permitted to park in Resident Permit Holders Only Bays, unless you have a valid Resident or Resident Visitor parking permit.  Due to concerns about security of permits on motorcycles, it is suggested that if you are a permit holder, you display a photocopy of your permit and keep the original safe in case of a query.
  • Motorcycles are not permitted to use the bicycle frames, which are situated in the Pedestrian Zones in the Town Centre.
  • Motorcycles are not exempt from 'No Waiting' parking restrictions.
  • There are 4 specific parking places provided in Hastings for Motor Cycles.  They are located in Albert Road/Denmark Place, Castle Street/Breeds Place, Robertson Street/White Rock and Wellington Square, the North Eastern Corner.  Parking is free within those areas.
  • Plastic Pay and Display ticket holders are available free of charge from the Parking Office or Hastings Information Centre.  These holders can be used to display your Pay and Display ticket, either around the handlebar or seat strap.  They are not secure, but will keep your ticket dry and safe from the elements.  It is always recommended that you retain the tear off stub from the ticket in order to prove that one was purchased, in the event of a penalty charge notice being issued to the motorcycle.
