Our house is literally opposite a bus stop with buses every 15 minutes to Winchester train station (1.7 miles away) and city centre which is only 10 minutes away via bus.

Also time it right and you can be at Southampton Airport in 30 minutes (bus/train) We have personally done this and it's stress free. 

If you're also looking to get to London there is a great service from Winchester train station which can get you to Waterloo within an hour.
